Darulfatwa Australia proudly welcomes the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) to its Chairman, His Eminence Professor Sheikh Salim Alwan Al-Husseini OAM, in recognition of his distinguished service to Islam, Qur’anic studies, education, scholarship and the wider Australian community.
This national honour acknowledges decades of dedicated service through teaching, authorship, religious guidance, community leadership, and the advancement of authentic Islamic scholarship both within Australia and internationally.
Professor Sheikh Salim Alwan Al-Husseini has devoted his life to the preservation and dissemination of Islamic knowledge, the education of generations of students, the strengthening of religious and educational institutions, and the promotion of mutual respect, social harmony and constructive engagement across communities.
As Chairman of Darulfatwa Australia – the Islamic High Council of Australia – he has played a leading role in fostering informed religious understanding, supporting community wellbeing, encouraging positive civic participation and promoting a balanced and responsible understanding of Islam grounded in scholarship, moderation and service.
Professor Alwan has served in a number of prominent international scholarly and advisory capacities, including as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide in Egypt, a Member of the Executive Board of the World Muslim Communities Council in Abu Dhabi, and a Member of the League of Arab Historians. His scholarly work has been presented through international
conferences, academic forums and media platforms, while his research and publications have contributed to contemporary Islamic thought and higher learning.
Darulfatwa Australia considers this honour a recognition not only of Professor Alwan’s personal contribution, but also of the enduring importance of education, scholarship, community service and the positive role that role model leadership play in strengthening Australian society.
