أصدر الإتحاد الفيدرالي للمجالس الإسلامية في أستراليا (AFIC) بياناً استنكارياً باللغة الإنجليزية يعبر عن رفضه لقرار جامعة ملبورن بفصل طالبين وتعليق دراسة طالبين آخرين بسبب مشاركتهم في احتجاجات سلمية مؤيدة لفلسطين داخل الحرم الجامعي.
ووصف الإتحاد هذا الإجراء بأنه قاسٍ وغير متناسب، محذراً من أنه يمثل اعتداءً على حقوق الطلاب، ويعكس اتجاهاً مقلقاً في الجامعات الأسترالية حيث يتم إسكات الأصوات التي تنتقد أفعال إسرائيل وتجريم التضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني.
في ظل التحذيرات المتزايدة من الهيئات الدولية، بما في ذلك الأمم المتحدة، بشأن الإبادة الجماعية المستمرة في غزة، اعتبرت AFIC أنه من غير المعقول أن تعاقب المؤسسات الأكاديمية الأسترالية الطلاب لمواقفهم الداعمة للإنسانية والعدالة والقانون الدولي.
ولطالما كان الحرم الجامعي يعتبر من المراكز المهمة للنقاش السياسي، والاحتجاج، والشجاعة الأخلاقية، حيث يُعبّر الطلاب عن آرائهم ويشاركون في حوارات هامة. إلا أن الإجراءات الأخيرة التي اتخذتها جامعة ملبورن تثير القلق، حيث تهدد بتحويل هذه الأماكن الحيوية إلى فضاءات للخوف والقمع.
ووصف الدكتور راتب جنيد، رئيس AFIC، الوضع بأنه “يوم مخزٍ” حيث يتم فصل الطلاب ليس بسبب سوء السلوك، بل بسبب شجاعتهم الأخلاقية. وأكد أن الجامعات، بدلاً من دعم الفكر النقدي والمشاركة المبدئية، تخضع الآن للضغوط السياسية.
كما دعا الإتحاد الفيدرالي للمجالس الإسلامية جامعة ملبورن إلى إعادة الطلاب المتأثرين على الفور، وإلغاء جميع الإجراءات التأديبية، والإنخراط في حوار هادف مع الأطراف المعنية التي تثير مخاوف مشروعة بشأن الإبادة الجماعية والإستعمار.
كما شدد الإتحاد على تضامنه الكامل مع هؤلاء الطلاب ومع جميع من اتخذوا مواقف مبدئية من أجل فلسطين في ظل مناخ معادٍ متزايد، مؤكداً على أهمية حماية حق الاحتجاج السلمي وحرية الضمير في المؤسسات الأكاديمية. وأشار إلى أنه لا يمكن أن تكون هناك نزاهة أكاديمية في بيئات تضحي بحقوق الإنسان من أجل المصلحة السياسية.
AFIC Condemns Expulsion of Pro-Palestine Students from University of Melbourne
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) expresses deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the University of Melbourne’s decision to expel two students and suspend two others for their involvement in peaceful pro-Palestine protests on campus.
This heavy-handed and disproportionate action is not only an attack on the rights of these individual students, but part of a wider, alarming trend in the Australian university sector, the silencing of voices critical of Israel’s actions and the criminalisation of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In a time when international bodies, including the United Nations, are sounding the alarm about the ongoing genocide in Gaza, it is unconscionable that Australian academic institutions are punishing students for standing on the side of humanity, justice, and international law.
University campuses have historically been spaces of political debate, protest, and moral courage. Today, they risk becoming spaces of fear, suppression, and censorship. The actions taken by the University of Melbourne represent a dangerous erosion of academic freedom and democratic principles.
“It is a shameful day when students are expelled not for misconduct, but for moral courage,” said Dr Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC.
“Instead of nurturing critical thought and principled engagement, universities are now bowing to political pressure and punishing those who dare speak against genocide. This is a betrayal of the very values our academic institutions are meant to uphold,” continued Dr Jneid.
AFIC calls on the University of Melbourne to immediately reinstate the affected students, drop all disciplinary measures, and engage in meaningful dialogue with those raising legitimate concerns about genocide, settler-colonialism, and international complicity.
We stand in full solidarity with these students and all others across the country who have taken a principled stand for Palestine despite an increasingly hostile climate. We also call on university leadership nationwide to protect, not punish, the exercise of conscience and the right to peaceful protest.
There can be no academic integrity in institutions that sacrifice human rights at the altar of political convenience.
