تعرّض المتظاهرون السلميون، بمن فيهم أفراد كانوا يؤدّون الصلاة، لعنف غير متناسب وغير ضروري. وأفاد شهود بوقوع اعتداءات جسدية، وتكتيكات صارمة للسيطرة على الحشود، واستخدام قوة شبه عسكرية ضد مواطنين لم يشكّلوا أي تهديد. كما تعرّض صحفي يبلغ من العمر 76 عامًا للضرب والإصابة، وتم احتجازه لمدة خمس ساعات قبل الإفراج عنه دون توجيه أي تهم. وتعكس هذه الواقعة الطبيعة العقابية وغير المبررة لعمل الشرطة في ذلك اليوم.

يطالب المجلس العربي أستراليا بمساءلة عاجلة وشفافة، بما في ذلك:

– إجراء تحقيق مستقل لتحديد من صرّح باستخدام القوة والأساس القانوني لتلك القرارات

– الإفراج الفوري عن جميع تسجيلات كاميرات الجسم لدى الأجهزة الأمنية والتوجيهات التشغيلية ذات الصلة

– مراجعة شاملة لسلوك الشرطة في المظاهرات السياسية

– فرض العقوبات التأديبية، وعند الاقتضاء القانوني، على الضباط والقادة المسؤولين

– إصلاح الصلاحيات الاستثنائية للشرطة لمنع إساءة استخدامها ضد المواطنين السلميين

هذه الحوادث ليست معزولة، بل تعكس تآكلًا أوسع للحريات الديمقراطية في أستراليا، حيث يُواجَه الاختلاف في الرأي بشكل متزايد بالترهيب والقوة. إن استهداف المتظاهرين السلميين بسبب آرائهم السياسية يتعارض مع أسس الديمقراطية السليمة.

يقف المجلس العربي أستراليا إلى جانب جميع ضحايا وحشية الشرطة، ويؤكد حق التجمع السلمي دون الخوف من العنف الحكومي. ويدعو حكومة نيو ساوث ويلز وقيادة الشرطة إلى الاعتراف بهذه الإخفاقات، والالتزام بإصلاحات جادة، واستعادة ثقة الجمهور في مؤسسة يفترض بها حماية حقوق الإنسان والحريات المدنية.

Arab Council Australia expresses deep alarm at the excessive and brutal police force used against

peaceful protesters in Sydney on 9 February 2026. What allegedly unfolded was not crowd

management, as claimed by police, but a disturbing display of state power aimed at intimidating and

silencing legitimate political expression.

Peaceful demonstrators, including individuals engaged in prayer, were subjected to disproportionate

and unnecessary violence. Witnesses reported physical assaults, aggressive crowd-control tactics,

and the use of paramilitary-style force against citizens who posed no threat. A 76-year-old journalist

was punched, injured, detained for five hours, and released without charge. This incident exemplifies

the baseless and punitive nature of the policing on the day.

These events reveal a troubling misuse of extraordinary police powers. The invocation of “Major

Event” declarations to justify unprecedented force represents a dangerous overreach that

undermines democratic rights. This pattern suggests an attempt to retroactively legitimise heavyhanded policing, restrict future demonstrations, and shift responsibility onto protesters for violence

initiated by police.

assembly without fear of state violence. We urge the NSW Government and police leadership to

acknowledge these failures, commit to meaningful reform, and restore public trust in policing that

respects human rights and civil liberties.
